About the IDF Pin Insignia Israeli Sayeret Matkal

The Sayeret Matkal unit, also known as the “unit”, is an IDF commando unit belonging to the Intelligence Branch. The mission of this special reconnaissance unit is to collect intelligence beyond enemy lines (and according to foreign publications, mainly setting up of intelligence-gathering devices), release of hostages in complex situations, fight against terrorism, and more. The unit is trained in all types of ground warfare and is also required to function in other special operations. 

Sayeret Matkal warriors have their own unique combat pin, but they are not wearing the pin because of their tradition and according to security instructions. They are the only special forces unit in the IDF that do not carry the unit badge on their uniform.  

In 2017 after of a long period of staff work in the Intelligence, Planning and Personnel divisions, and after the approval of the Chief of the General Staff, Gadi Eizenkot, and the head of Military Intelligence, Hertzi Halevi, the new service route of the Sayeret Matkal unit was launched.

This is the first track of its kind in the IDF, which constitutes a breakthrough in the training of a combat soldier. It changes that took place last summer  shortened the training period from 20 months to 16 months.

Shortening of the times, the intelligence department explains, constitutes an operational efficiency of the combatant’s service period, enabling longer and more continuous activity during regular service. According to them, this is a necessary change in view at times of changing reality and the complexity of the tasks facing the unit’s fighters.
